Description
Description
Tanzanite is a gemstone that represents a variety of a mineral called zoisite. Tanzanite crystals are trichroic, and when the gemstone is rotated, its color changes from blue to dark, to violet, to yellowish-green.
When heated, tanzanite crystals become only blue. Blue is the most popular color, and therefore, the majority of tanzanite is heat-treated. Tanzanite is cut into gemstones with many flat polished surfaces, which accentuates its light-reflecting property. Gemstones are used in jewelry such as rings, necklaces, and earrings.
Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 in Tanzania, after which it was named. Tanzania is the only known source of tanzanite. Because its supply is limited, these gemstones are expensive.
